160m Projects - Amplifiers

Click to enlarge160m amplifier with sweep tubes by 9A3MR
Few years ago 9A6C purchased CB amplifier with 5 PL519 sweep tubes inside. Amp was , very generous, declared as 1kw amplifier. One tube was in pre-driver stage and others was in final stage. Due to lack of amplifiers with 160m band decision was to rearrange this monster into decent ham amplifier.

If you are getting started on MF or LF and plan on using the low level output from an SDR radio, or a homebuilt transverter, then you will probably need an amplifier with high gain and enough power output to drive a larger power amp.

Russian impulse triodes Gi7i are cheap rugged tubes. Original anode coolers was replaced with hi power rectifier coolers which perfectly fit and allows better cooling by easy-to-find axial blower.

Simple 1.9MHz Power Amplifier by G4JNT A
I wanted a simple class-C PA to give about 10 Watts out, say 12 Watts to allow for O/Pfilter losses. It had to run from a nominal 13V supply and a low cost switching type Mosfetwas the obvious choice for the PA.
